What ATP testing measures
ATP, adenosine triphosphate, is present in organic material. A swab taken from a surface and read in a luminometer gives a rapid indication of how much organic residue remains after cleaning.
That makes it a useful proxy for cleaning thoroughness: a high reading on a freshly cleaned surface tells you the clean has missed something.
What it does not measure
ATP testing does not identify specific pathogens, and it does not prove a surface is sterile. A low reading means low organic residue, not the absence of every microorganism.
Results should always be read alongside visual checks, cleaning records and the wider hygiene picture, not treated as a standalone guarantee.
Making it useful
The value comes from consistency: agreed sampling points, agreed frequency and agreed acceptance criteria, all set out in the cleaning specification before work starts. Trends over time are more informative than any single reading.
KOJO FM builds ATP checks and written reports into cleaning specifications where commissioned, so you get a clear record of what was cleaned, what was measured and any exceptions.
