Biohazard and bodily-fluid response: what to expect from a call-out

Blood and bodily-fluid contamination needs a risk-assessed response, not a mop and bucket. Knowing what a professional call-out involves helps you act quickly and brief the team properly.

Before the team arrives

Isolate the affected area if you can, and keep people away from it. When you call, be ready with the location, the type of incident, the surfaces affected and the access arrangements. The more detail you can give, the faster the response can be scoped.

Scope, charges and attendance are agreed for each call-out, so there are no surprises.

What the response involves

The team carries out a risk assessment, then cleans and disinfects the affected environment using suitable products, PPE and segregated equipment. Waste from the clean is handled under the agreed arrangements for that waste stream.

Urgent response is available 24/7/365, including nights, weekends and bank holidays.

After the clean

You should receive a clear record of what was done: the areas treated, the methods used and any exceptions. In clinical settings, the decision to return the space to use remains with the provider, informed by their own checks.
