Why handover cleaning deserves its own scope

A refurbishment can be finished on paper and still not ready to use. Dust in corners, residue on surfaces and debris in fixtures all stand between practical completion and a space the client can actually reopen.

Builders' clean vs handover clean

A builders' clean removes the bulk of construction debris and dust. A handover clean goes further: detailed cleaning of fixtures, fittings, high and low surfaces, floors and touchpoints, so the space is ready for the client's own inspection.

Treating these as the same thing is the most common reason handovers stall. They are different standards, and the handover clean should be scoped separately.

What to put in the scope

List the areas, surfaces and fixtures to be cleaned, the standard expected, and how completion will be checked. Agree whether the clean happens once or in stages as trades finish, and who signs it off.

In clinical settings, the clean can be coordinated with the provider's own pre-opening checks. Clinical release of the space remains with the provider.

Coordinating with the works programme

The best results come when the final clean is planned alongside the works, not booked after them. When the same partner delivers the refurbishment and the cleaning, the handover clean is scheduled into the programme from day one.
