Enhanced cleaning during an outbreak: who directs what

When infection risk rises, cleaning is one of the first lines of response. But enhanced environmental cleaning works best when everyone is clear about who decides what.

The IPC team leads

In healthcare settings, the infection prevention and control team owns the outbreak response. They decide which areas are affected, what products and methods are required, and when a space can return to normal use.

A cleaning partner's role is to follow that direction precisely: stepping up frequencies, applying the agreed products and methods, and documenting what was done.

What stepping up looks like

Enhanced cleaning typically means increased frequencies on high-touch points, additional cleans of affected areas, segregated equipment to avoid cross-contamination, and clear records of every visit.

Environmental cleaning reduces contamination. It cannot guarantee that any pathogen is eradicated, which is why it sits inside the IPC team's wider arrangements rather than replacing them.

Preparing before you need it

The time to agree enhanced-cleaning arrangements is before an outbreak, not during one. A cleaning specification that already names escalation routes, products, frequencies and reporting means the response can start immediately when the IPC team calls for it.
