Work backwards from the first day of term
The deadline is immovable: pupils return on a fixed date. Everything, from survey to snagging to the final clean, has to fit before it. Working backwards from that date shows how much time each stage really has.
A written programme agreed before the holiday starts keeps every trade honest about what fits.
Bundle the works sensibly
Holidays are the time for classroom and corridor upgrades, ceilings, flooring, decoration and teaching-space refurbishment. Deep cleaning of kitchens, sports halls and shared areas can be scheduled in the same window, so the whole site comes back ready at once.
Coordinating refurbishment and cleaning under one brief avoids the classic end-of-holiday scramble where the works finish but the building is not clean enough to open.
Safeguarding and access
Even in an empty school, access, safeguarding requirements and site induction need to be coordinated with the institution. Agree these before the window opens, not on the first morning.
