Waste segregation: who is responsible for what

Waste is where good intentions meet legal reality. Each stage of the waste journey carries its own responsibilities, and assuming someone else has it covered is how organisations end up exposed.

The stages are separate

Segregating waste at source, handling it on site, storing it, transporting it and disposing of it are distinct activities. Each must be covered by suitably authorised arrangements, and the authorisations are not interchangeable.

A waste-carrier registration, for example, covers transport. It is not, on its own, authorisation for every waste activity.

Agree the split in writing

Before any cleaning or refurbishment work starts, agree who is responsible for each waste stream at each stage. In healthcare settings, clinical waste arrangements are usually well established; the gaps tend to appear around refurbishment waste, packaging and mixed streams.

The classification of the waste decides the route it must take, so the right route is confirmed for each stream before work begins.

What a cleaning partner should do

A professional partner works within the agreed arrangements: segregating correctly at source, using the right containers, and never moving waste outside the authorised routes. If the arrangements are unclear, the right answer is to ask, not to improvise.
